As this article notes, we now have one new form of yoga to add to the list of strange forms of yoga like chair yoga and kickboxing yoga. The new one: museum yoga. Or maybe artsy yoga. Or just "art yoga."
What is this new type of yoga? Its the kind of yoga where you perform it in an art gallery. Now, its not as exciting as kickboxing yoga, for sure. But its probably a brilliant marketing move on the part of museums to catch onto the fad. And what better place to do yoga then in a quiet, meditative space.
And as some of the quotes point out, its a chance for museums to shed light on the greater history and context of yoga through the displaying of yogic art pieces and other relevant artifacts. You are not going to get that kind of treatment at your local gym!
Whether this is only going on in Utica, New York, or whether its been embraced by the heartland I cannot say. But its nice to see a different, more contemplative take on yoga then some of the spins on yoga I've seen lately.
